FAMINE IN EAST AFRICA –
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL COUNCIL GENERAL DONATES
The volatile environment changes that has hit East Africa for the last 2 years have brought about a lot of misery in the region. Malnutrition in children and starvation have been prevalent. Somalia and Ethiopia have been hit most. Uganda has also shared the suffering caused by the unfavourable weather changes. Prolonged drought had devastated a multitude of acres of farmland and people in some regions in Uganda had resorted to hunting in order to survive.
To address some of the miseries Council General in Paris, France sent Eu3000 to SSVP Uganda in August this year. With the funds some relief items were purchased and donated to various centres.
No sooner had the donation been affected than heavy torrential rains started pounding the highlands of Karamoja region, North East of Kampala City. At the same time the lower parts neighboring the region also started receiving daily down pours. In the process rivers in the upper Karamoja started sending down a lot of waters to the lower region of Mbale causing floods.
The floods washed down villages, swept away crops, homes, bridges and any other form of infrastructure. 49 people together with thousands of livestock plus houses were buried near Mt. Elgon by Mudslides.
On receiving the news once again Council General intervened and the following relief items were purchased and donated to the victims through church hierarchy.
- Maize flour 20 metric tons
- Beans 5 metric tons
- Medical Drugs 5 boxes (assorted)
- Mosquito Nets 1200
Council in Uganda is highly indebted to Council General to the generous gesture.

Denis Kyabaggu & St Vincent de Paul of Uganda
Denis Kyabaggu had the idea of starting the Uganda website for The Society of St Vincent de Paul. This organization is world wide and it's members are men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to individuals in need. "We are young and old. Our members come in every shade of skin color. Some of us are wealthy, some are financially poor, but all of us are blessed with an awareness that our blessings (time, talent or treasure) are to be shared with our brothers and sisters in need.", said Denis. Denis is a Youth Vincentian who is involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Kampala, Uganda.
